Dear Visitor,

The aims of this website are many: most obviously, it is for ornithologists who have an interest in Egyptian avifaunal records. However, it is also for amateur birdwatchers and for beginners who have started birding as a pastime in which they have developed an interest. Moreover, and arguably its primary aim, it is intended to be a source of information and assistance for all, but especially the people of Egypt.

It is understandable that anyone not familiar with deserts might imagine that they are featureless and of little natural history interest. One of our main goals is to promote interest and knowledge of this amazing piece of the Earth, by trying to widen knowledge of the living creatures that live in it, or pass through it. The desert avifauna is of considerable importance in itself. However, it is also important because, compared with most other organisms, birds can be observed and recorded comparatively easily, and for selected species, annual variation in numbers relates directly to the health of the habitat. The use of such data to monitor the health of ecological niches is now well-established at government level in some countries, and serves as an example of how to improve all biodiversity conservation efforts.

The website enables researchers (whether Egyptian, resident foreigners, or travelling birders) to be interconnected through our mailing list. It also provides them with sound basic information in the form of an accessible list of the governmental and non-governmental institutions in Egypt that have an involvement in environmental affairs.

Birding in Egypt has been set up with the intention of being as a unifying forum for those of disparate ornithological interests and who wish to share their knowledge to assist nature conservation in Egypt.

Birding in Egypt is open to cooperation with any environmental conservation projects in Egypt. The natural corollary is that any help (such as volunteering your services, or making a small donation) with our ongoing projects would be gratefully received.

To join our community, please join the EgyBirdGroup mailing list so that we can exchange news and share or gain information. By joining our discussion group, with just one click you can join other reputable mailing lists from North Africa and the Middle East.

To cover the maintenance costs of this web page and to help fund various research and conservation projects, twice a year we organise a birding trip around Egypt. These trips are organized in cooperation with Green Eye Ecotours. By booking a trip, you will become a valued contributor to our conservation and bird migration research effort.

Truly yours:
